We are the Campbell family and operate Whitegum Farming, our family farm in Nalyerlup, Western Australia. We farm 5,000HA and crop canola, wheat and barley.
Mat is the third generation to farm the land and now manages the business, focusing on broadacre cropping.
Mat’s wife, Dani, who is originally from the USA, looks after the farm’s office administration. Together they have two young boys who are growing up immersed in farm life. Mat’s parents remain actively involved in the operation, sharing their experience and practical knowledge.
We currently have one full-time employee and throughout the year we employ casual staff to assist on the farm.
Our approach to farming is built around accountability, a positive attitude, clear communication and teamwork. These values guide how we work together, make decisions and take responsibility for getting the job done properly.
Timing is critical in broadacre dryland cropping, so we place a strong emphasis on completing operations at the right time and as efficiently as possible. Our cropping program operates on 12-metre controlled traffic tramlines, helping us improve accuracy, reduce unnecessary soil compaction and make better use of our machinery.
We continually look for practical ways to improve. This includes using variable-rate mapping to better match inputs to different areas of the farm and conducting on-farm trials each year. These trials help us assess new products, practices and technologies under our own conditions before making broader changes.
Our aim is to keep learning, work efficiently and make sound decisions that support the long-term productivity of the farm.
